Get on with the country's development

Dear Editor,

As I read your piece, "Residents triumph over developer", in the online version of the Jamaica Observer on October 20, I couldn't help but muse on how strange the thinking of some of our people has become. Here we have a situation where a developer has bought land in an area that, by all indications, is both residential and commercial in character. Devon House, a sprawling hive of commercial activities, is mere metres away, an office complex shares fence line with the proposed development, and yet the citizens are railing against use of the land to develop a small hotel!

How are we going to move forward to extricate ourselves from the current economic situation with the mindset of citizens like those in the Canterbury Manor area? Would they prefer if the lot was taken over by a hive of prostitutes and their johns, as is the case with many empty lots? The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and the other planning authorities should approve this development post-haste after taking into consideration other factors such as traffic flow, etc, and let's get on with the development of this country.
