Living in flood-prone areas should be banned

Dear Editor,

With the passage of Hurricane Sandy we are now assessing the damage done to the country. But I am astonished that most of the badly affected areas and people generally share the same location all the time.

During and after these disasters come the desperate pleas for help from those affected, especially when houses are destroyed. The government is then expected to address those concerns in what seems to be a never-ending saga.

May I suggest that the government declare those flood-prone and precarious areas unfit for human habitation, and relocate houses forthwith with the firm decision that no further occupancy of such areas will be allowed.

I can foresee the challenges to find suitable land for those to be relocated. However, we cannot go on in this fashion, and a way will have to be found to rectify the situation. After all, it is causing the government to use up resources that could be spent in other areas.
