Dear Editor,

I had the pleasure of attending the Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum International Bartender Challenge on October 26 at the Wyndham Hotel in Kingston. It was really a treat for me to taste cocktails by bartenders from countries as far away as Australia to ones as near as Cayman. They were very friendly and willing to answer questions about their individual mixes.

Congratulations to the winner, Richard Tring from the UK. It was

heart-warming to see that Richard utilised our local ingredients creatively and even named his cocktail "Independence Punch" in celebration of Jamaica's 50th.

And of course, the Appleton poured into each mixture kept us all in very high spirits! A lift we so needed, especially since Hurricane Sandy had just wreaked havoc in Jamaica and was now heading for the USA where so many of us have families and friends.

J Wray and Nephew continues to host first-class events, ones that make us forget our troubles and focus on the positive. We have much to be thankful for, and being home to one of the oldest rums in the world is one of them.

Because there were participants from a number of countries - Peru, Cayman, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Cayman Islands, USA and Canada, the competition was also great publicity for Brand Jamaica.

Kudos to J Wray and Nephew for a job well done!
