Why the power delays?

Dear Editor,

Our political leadership has no will, urgency or shame. After botching the initial negotiations to have the 381-MW power plant built they realised — were forced to acknowledge — the fact that they did not follow proper procedure.

Truth be told it was really only after the Inter-American Development Bank refused to give funding to the project that the consequences were acknowledged. Energy World International (EWI) only made matters worse by failing to post their performance bond.

The Government stated that the EWI's licence would be revoked some time ago; with word that the formal revocation will only be complete in July. What is being done to restart the bidding process?

The energy minister said that the 2016 start date for the plant was sacrosanct. This cannot be possible if we have not even chosen a preferred bidder. Why are we backing ourselves into a corner where we will be forced to make a hurried and improper assessment of bidders?

The Enterprise team needs something to assess if they are they are to achieve their mandate. I implore the Government to get on with what needs to be done. Our electricity bills await more efficient power.
