Give Fenton Ferguson his due

Dear Editor,

I was surprised to see the scathing criticism levelled at Dr Fenton Ferguson in the media this past week.

I have always been a cynic where the health sector is concerned, but since he became minister of health I have had a ray of hope. I have been around a long time — I am over 50 years old — and I cannot remember ever seeing so much development taking place in the health sector in such a short space of time, and especially given the financial situation of the country.

Don't get me wrong, many of the problems in the health sector remain, as these are not things that will disappear overnight. But, if I am to be fair, and I consider myself to be so, I would say give the minister credit for what he has done.

I have seen a big difference in service at the health centre I visit routinely. I have never seen a primary health care facility compared to the likes of the centre of excellence, and I like that the minister is focusing attention on preventing diseases. This is something I wish we were doing years ago.

Furthermore, he has been fearless in dealing with some of the stakeholders within and outside of the health sector that some previous ,inisters seemed to have been afraid to face. Give the minister his due.
