Keep Ebola threat in check

Dear Editor,

I think it is commendable that health care workers and the UN go to the far reaches of the Earth to assist sickened people. However, I have a great deal of concern that when they become ill, they quickly return home.

First of all, several individuals have been irresponsible in their reporting. Dr Sanjay Gupta stated that Ebola is infectious, but not contagious. Wrong. Lyme disease is infectious, but not contagious. Ebola is contagious. How else do you think the two health care workers contracted Ebola?

Furthermore, the World Health Organisation states that: "Ebola can be transmitted by mosquitoes." So now you have two individuals whom I presume were bitten by mosquitoes and will expose a vector to others in the Atlanta area.

It is commendable that these two health care workers have been treating such gravely ill people in Africa. But with a disease that has a 60 to 90 per cent fatality rate I do not believe that when someone becomes infected that it is fair to the rest of the nation for them to run home seeking assistance. It is irresponsible. These are just my opinions.

We simply do not know enough about this disease.
