What have you done for Ja lately?

Dear Editor,

I have always heard people say over the years that Jamaica has done nothing for them, and even today they still complain. So now Jamaica wants to know, "What have you done for me lately?"

We live in a country where nothing happens until it happens to our family and friends. When we hear what is happening to others in the country we listen and then our lives continue unaffected.

Yesterday Jamaica turned 52, and we have really come a long way. Some may argue that we are still not independent, the country's economic condition has sunk too far to be stabilised, there is continued loss of jobs, and the list goes on.

Some of us, however, still have lots of hope in our country and will continue to play our part to help bring Jamaica on top. For starters, we don't wake up to the sound of bombs daily; so let us be grateful. We are a blessed little country.

Those who sit around complaining, why not join hands and play your part in helping our nation to move forward? Ask yourself what have you done for Jamaica lately since you have been asking what has Jamaica done for you.

As much as we don't want to believe it, we are the ones who should be held responsible for the state of our country. Stop blaming the colour division for election. This is not any politician's country, it is our country, and until we start playing our role we cannot expect anything to change. They work for us, not the other way around. Who elected them to office?

The time has come when we can no longer sit in the comfort of our luxurious homes and ignore what happens in other parts of the country. It will reach our doorsteps.

The time has come for us to start supporting our brothers and sisters who are making a way forward in producing products that we can consume. When you shop, make an effort to, at least, buy four locally produced products among the imported ones you buy.

Only we can help the country. And if you do not want to do it for us do it for the younger generation that will take over from us.

So, Happy Birthday, Jamaica.
