The youth must claim their place in Independence

Dear Editor,

Independence is a state of the mind, the freedom of the soul, and a feeling cherished by the heart. This sense of liberation, characterised by patriotism and self-dependence, is not unique to Jamaica, rather it is reflected throughout the wider Caribbean due to the similar experiences that we have shared with our brothers and sisters from other territories.

Jamaicans might be deemed more sentimental about our Independence as we were the ones to champion this cause in 1960, which saw our political detachment from Great Britain in 1962.

Gone, now, are the days of colonialism, where the colour of one's skin tone dictated what socio-economic stratum they would be categorised in.

Nevertheless, with the knowledge and wisdom given to us from above, we are now empowered to rule our native land. We, a nation, small in size, working together hand in hand with patience, wisdom and courage can facilitate the growth of our economy, thus safeguarding our social welfare.

As we celebrate the season, little Jamaica stands tall with a vision of continued success and resilience against all odds. Every dark cloud has a silver lining and so there is hope for our sweet island home.

We are a nation under God; struggles are not new to us. The majority of our successes came about on the backs of our struggling forefathers who faced these challenges head on and overcame them.

With this in mind, I implore the youth of this nation to face our challenges head-on. Let us take a page or three out of the books of our national heroes and heroine.

My fellow youth, I charge you to be responsible in all that you do, because we are the present and, indeed, we are the future. Let us emulate George William Gordon and use our position, despite our backgrounds, to raise the awareness of issues affecting us.

We are the future leaders of this beautiful island so let our voices be heard in all arenas because no one knows the struggles we face better than us.

In the paraphrased words of the late Mahatma Gandhi: "...be the change that you wish to see in Jamaica".
