No love for 2014 festival song

Dear Editor,

Since everybody is entitled to his opinion, I just want to give my honest one on the 2014 festival song.

Since 1966, when festival song competitions began with the easy-going Toots & the Maytals and his well-loved songs, we were moving in the right direction, with good lyrics, strong beat and rhythm, and they were all sounding good, leaving a great impact on the nation.

I have spoken about festival music losing its traditional grip and that we need to bring it back to where it once was. But, unfortunately, this current song, titled I love Ja, falls far from the mark. Worse, two of the main ingredients that ought to put it on a high and make it sound nice, lively and exciting — the beat and the rhythm — are very poor.

I don't know what could have caused the Jamaican public to lose their heads and vote for such a song. I nearly buck my big toe and fall down when I heard the song that was declared the winner.

This song badly lacks the festival fever, the taste and the seasoning. It's not hot, not even lukewarm.

Songs that do not have a strong beat and can 'liven-up' our spirits should never be selected as a festival song.
