Dear Editor,
I read with deep disgust the letter to the editor entitled, 'Jamaicans are a bunch of hypocrites'.
You mentioned that "it's not the first time an inmate has died while in custody, so why the uproar". Well, let me shed some light on that for you.
Firstly, the police are responsible for anyone in their custody. It is high time the security forces hired to "protect and serve" do just that. It is the nation's tax dollars that pay their salaries; not just the elite of the society for whom the police will go through hell or high water to protect, but not the poor as well.
The poor keep killing the poor, and everyone seems to be blind to this. It is quite unusual to see a rich man join the security forces; therefore I can obviously assume that the vast majority of police officers and soldiers are indeed "poor people pickney". And yet the police continue to belittle, hurt, and kill their brothers and sisters.
When was the last time you heard of a police victim being a member of the "uptown community"? I'm sure you're stomped, because I am as well.
It just never happens. Black men are killing each other at an alarming rate, and we are all busy changing Facebook statuses and taking selfies.
We are all responsible for our society however, it is never too late to do the right thing.
I sincerely hope that you have read my article with understanding and will be empowered to stand for what is right even if that means you stand alone.
