Jamaicans need to vote wisely

Dear Editor,

The recent American presidential elections provided us with a great opportunity to learn an invaluable lesson, but the question is: Did we learn it?

In December 2011, Jamaicans, by virtue of their vote, removed the JLP government from power, blaming them for the current economic crisis. On the other hand, the American voters re-elected Barack Obama for a second term, recognising that their current economic troubles did not occur overnight. The Americans were smart enough to understand that it took more than four years to get them to where they are now. When asked, the majority of them rightly placed the blame on eight years of bad management by the Bush administration.

If the Jamaican people were as intelligent and as objective as the Americans, the PNP government would not have got another chance to finish the wreck they put us in during their 18 1/2 years of bad management. However, the people of Jamaica are too caught up with politics to realise that there was no way the JLP, in three-plus years, could have fixed the damage that took place under 18 1/2 years of PNP governance. So because the Jamaicans, once again, failed to know what is best for them, the PNP are back to wreck the country again.

If we must learn anything from the Americans, we must learn that the best person to lead us through a crisis is not always the person from the team we are most comfortable with. In the recent presidential election, there were millions of Republicans who voted for Barack Obama because they recognised that they did not want to go in the direction Romney wanted to take them. Jamaica will get better, but only when Jamaicans start to vote wisely.
