Citizens playing to the tricks of politicians

Dear Editor,

Each time there is a major financial decision made by our Government we get a glimpse of how little they care about the poor in the society. We also get to see just how well they play with the minds of the citizens. I can only hope that Jamaicans are able to recognise the bait-and-switch tactic as it happens.

The Government is so adept at pulling the wool over our eyes after they have given us burdensome financial responsibilities, that we misinterpret as having a conscience. How unexpected was it that the minister of transport would quickly amend the $40 increase in fares for the elderly to $20? It was to be expected.

The Government is aware of what it does and has gained enough experience to be able to gauge the reaction from the public. It is also aware that we have a usual nine days of lamentation then we fall in line soon thereafter. They effectively anticipated the response that has been given and already had the plan B.

We should, however, anticipate their plan A of $60 to return next year along with increases in the other categories as well. The JUTC shows no signs of learning from its mistakes and that could be because the Government is always prepared to 'post bail' by pressuring the pockets of the public.

Furthermore, Jamaica's strategies to realise financial stability are only being tested at this time. These increases are inevitable, and for that reason the Opposition's planned march is another game with desperate players. Neither the Government nor the Oposition is for the people. It all boils down to which party has the better trick.

The JLP is desperate, and since Jamaicans have been in a marching mood, it is hoping to rally support for the next general election. It is their disingenuous attempt at expressing sympathy for the poor. It is a smart move since people care about their financial woes more than anything else. Certainly, there is nothing else in society that the JLP could have called a march for at this time. This peaceful march will only plant further false hopes.
