Dear Editor,
For how long will the ruling authorities continue pleading with motorists to stop the speeding and reckless driving on the streets? When will reckless and presumptuous drivers heed the warning, to cut their speed and stop the dangerous overtaking of other vehicles, which oftentimes result in terrible crashes and people dying senselessly?
The Government is not doing enough to punish stiff-necked drivers and rowdies severely, who are wreaking serious havoc on our roads, cutting short the lives of people, almost on a daily basis. Punishment at the tip of the iceberg can't work.
On the other hand, most of the time when motorists are speeding and overtaking dangerously, the passengers just sit back and keep their mouths tightly closed, and will never cry out to the speedsters to cut their speed. And if someone asks a driver to go easy on the gas, it creates a lot of attention on that person, as if he/she has done something wrong.
Maybe one of the reasons so many Jamaicans are dying so senselessly and untimely, leaving their families in grief is because they will not open their mouth and call to the ones who are gambling with their lives.
Too many Jamaicans have already died in traffic crashes for us not to unleash drastic punishment on culprits who are disobedient and constantly break traffic laws. We are like a set of jokers playing with our lives.
