Admit Holness not the best leader for JLP

Dear Editor,

The November conference presents the Jamaica Labour Party with an opportunity to admit that it made a bad 'bargain' to select Andrew Holness as leader.

The way forward is to accept another challenge from Shaw, who should come out the better man. He will then have time to whip the party into shape to win the next general election and give the people of Jamaica some hope.

The alternative is for Holness to hang on past his shelf life, like Edward Seaga, and give the People's National Party many more years to punish the people.

And speaking of that, had Seaga handed over to Shaw in 1993, we would not be in the present hole. Not only did Seaga hang on, but he failed to use his influence to prevent Bruce Golding returning as party leader. And Bruce, as I have said so many times, is a man with all of Seaga's weaknesses and none of Seaga's strengths. Bruce, when forced to resign, paid tribute to his own vanity by setting the pitch for Holness, a man he was sure would not eclipse him. So the party passed over the better man again and left the country without a viable Opposition leader. My poor country.
