Dear Editor:
I have been following some of the criticisms levelled at Member of Parliament for West Rural St Andrew, Mr Paul Buchanan, and found most, if not all of them to be true.
The recent roadblock mounted on the Above Rocks road in protest over the poor condition of the roadway in the Red Hills division of the constituency, can be justified by the fact that the MP spends very little of his time trying to correct some of the ills that face the people of the constituency, particularly as they relate to roads.
All Mr Buchanan does when he is confronted about improving road and water conditions is blame the agencies involved, like the National Works Agency and the National Water Commission, and sometimes ministers Omar Davies and Robert Pickersgill for not listening to him.
I do not know what goes on between the ministers and Mr Buchanan, but they all belong to the same party and appear to be good friends, so for the MP to be passing blame when certain things are not achieved, it seems strange.
Some of us do not expect to see Mr Buchanan every day, every week, or every month. In fact, as long as he is doing what he was elected to do, we don't have to see him at all.
West Rural St Andrew has been in desperate straights for many years. The former MP, Andrew Gallimore did very little to improve the living condition of the over 70,000 people who reside there.
Now, we are seeing an even worse performer as the representative in the Jamaican Parliament. The roads are terrible, water systems in shambles, the farmers are hurting as the tracks that they have to use to transport produce are dreadful, unemployment is rock bottom as youth just sit on the corner each day living in hope.
Mr Buchanan is not a man who keeps his word. He makes a lot of promises that he cannot fulfil; he is always late for appointments and generally takes people for granted.
Maybe Mr Buchanan can also devote as much time to the progressive men of the constituency, and not just the women, in hearing their pleas.
We have seen where Ms Juliet Cuthbert has been working in the constituency, representing the Jamaica Labour Party.
Based on how Mr Buchanan has been performing, it appears that Ms Cuthbert will become the new MP when the next election is called. She too will have to come prepared to work hard for all the people and not just for a handful of them as Mr Buchanan seems to be doing.
