WICB must manage its affairs

Dear Editor,

The recent abandonment of the Test tour by West Indies cricketers in India has done immense damage to West Indies cricket, such as destroyed the foundation of prestige, cloud the legacy, affect future marketability, and may lead to the financial ruin of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

According to preliminary claims submitted by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) there may be ripples into the Caribbean Premier League, the recent cash cow.

The BCCI is the wealthiest cricket board, and their Government, private sector, and people give exemplary support for the game, example lights at Sabina Park. At one time a beer company sponsored the West Indies cricket team on tours; and not to mention our players receiving premium income in the Indian Premier League.

The call is now is for the WICB to strengthen their management team's human resources management, which entails, human relations, welfare, industrial labour laws, standards of performance and evaluation as they relate to compensation and contracts agreements, etc.

The final arbitration on this matter should include regulations that a 'strike' such as this will never recur. The hope is that there is not business as usual judging from utterances emanating from a meeting: "There will be no victimisation, all players from the strike are available for the tour to South Africa to ensure the strongest team is selected." The WICB and selectors should act from a position of strength as their predecessors did with the rebel tour of South Africa during apartheid.
