There have been too many controversies plaguing this present Government.
The National Housing Trust (NHT) controversy, where NHT funds were used to purchase a failed, privately owned tourist attraction for a whopping $180 million, is just one of too many! The attraction has a reported accumulated debt of $144 million and it is expected to require an additional $100-million investment to upgrade the facility. Will NHT finance this as well?
The NHT was started by former PM and social visionary Michael Manley as a pool of funds contributed by employee/employers to be used to provide housing for lower- to middle-income groups via low-interest mortgages, and loans.
None of this new business at NHT makes any sense, not even to the lay person! It is outrageous, to say the least. No matter which angle you look at it. There is just not enough to throw around!
An investment of this size should've been reviewed and passed all the right protocols before being approved. It is obvious the Government is top-heavy, too many cooks spoiling the broth with no one taking responsibility or giving direction, no one with a proper plan or even a vision, and no one seeming to be accountable. They have lost sight of the core role and function of Government, and the level of responsibility and accountability expected. Priorities are way out of sync.
The people of Jamaica hereby demand better governance, accountability and responsibility, with less arrogance, ignorance, and contempt. The Oath of Office should be amended to include a clause, 'and we will always put Jamaica first'! Is that too much to ask?
