Dear Editor,
I believe that Jamaica's attempt to search for oil yet again will not do us much good.
Why? Because a country doesn't need oil to prosper. There are many countries with little or no oil reserves and are among the most prosperous nations. On the other hand, we have nations that have some of the largest oil reserves in the world and are yet to attain any position of dominance.
Singapore and Japan are very prosperous nations but they have no oil reserves. Let us also remember that these nations were once poorer than us and were ravaged during the Second World War.
Libya has the 10th-largest oil reserves in the world, yet it's anything but a developed nation. In fact, much of the country's income from oil has been spent on arms purchases and on sponsoring dozens of paramilitaries and terrorist groups around the world. Libya has high levels of social inequality, high rates of youth unemployment, and regional economic disparities. Water supply is also a problem.
Oil can indeed help a nation prosper, but that is if the money from it is actually used in developing the country. So if we do find oil, I don't see why we should celebrate. Because will the income from the oil go to help the country or corrupt politicians?
