Dear Editor,
It is indeed shocking to well-thinking and patriotic Jamaicans worldwide to see what has been passing as political campaigning in Jamaica in recent times. Politicking has hit a low overall, but the recent "low blow" show in social media, by an affiliate JLP group, "Speak Your Mind Jamaica", seemingly sanctioned by that party's leaders, hits the dirt, and hard. No one from the party's leadership core has so far publicly denounced these insulting acts and distanced themselves from them.
The superimposition of Nazi uniforms on Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and information minister, Senator Sandrea Falconer, is really distasteful and troubling. Do these people even realise that they not only insult us as Jamaicans with this spurious attempt at comedy, but are holding our entire country up to international scorn, ridicule and contempt?
It is a sad state of affairs when a political party has to seemingly seek rite of passage politically by trending on the tremendous and legendary pain and suffering of a people. Any people!
I am mindful that black children were sterilised during those horrible times so they could not propagate, and that pains me. I don't see how the JLP could ever find comedic value and relief in such an inference.
And, for what crime are these women being likened to the Fuehrer? Simply for standing their ground, and rightly so, in the face of badgering and heckling from across the floor. I suggest there may even have been sexist undertones, because these women would not bend or yield in the face of their attempts to infuriate and verbally dominate them. Either way, it's not a good look for us as a nation. This debasement of our PM and Ms Falconer should be decried by all of us. Nip this trend in the bud before it gets out of hand. It is bad that a party seeking the right to lead us as a people would allow its affiliate to stoop so low and, in the process, shoot themselves in their political foot.
We certainly don't need this. The world is looking on right now with big eyes. We can scarce afford to turn them off anyone at this time when we are finally seeing positive growth after successive regimes bludgeoned our economy.
