Dear Editor,
I have noticed that since the announced acquisition of Columbus International by Cable and Wireless Communication plc (CWC) a more "forward" posture is being taken by Digicel.
Frankly, I don't like what I see being played out, especially in the media.
The latest position is that Digicel is threatening that they will cut back their investment if the CWC/Columbus merger goes through in a way that they don't like. Some say " re-examine its investment plan".
I'm just an ordinary Jamaican citizen but, from my limited knowledge, when companies do business here, re-investing in our markets don't mean that they are doing us a favour, but it's a normal way of conducting business.
So, if Digicel is in any way contemplating reconsidering its investment plans, that is not even a veiled threat. That is arm-twisting tactics.
How come their commitment change when they don't get their way? Frankly, it sounds a bit like, I'll take my marbles and go play somewhere else.
Where might this 'elsewhere' be, you might ask? I think it's a very interesting and important question. Because, remember, a lot of that cash they are investing is the hard-earned money that we've paid up for our bills. So where is that money being 're-invested' if not in improving services here in Jamaica?
