Dear Editor,
I am really having a problem with the "get money at all costs" approach of our government when it comes to taxation.
How can we be paying 25 per cent tax on phone credit, then we are now being forced to pay tax for using the credit we just got taxed for?
I find this reprehensible and unethical coming from a government that launched the Values and Attitudes Campaign.
While I won't fool myself that it will be repealed, I really hope that those pursuing this policy will realise that this has the effect of only reducing tax intake (note the traffic-ticket amnesty fiasco), which will put more pressure on these same people to find ways to get money somewhere else.
I join with other voices to say that if you want more tax dollars, you should stimulate production, widen the tax net, especially for GCT, and let the increased number of taxpayers help to plug holes in the budget.
It's time to stop overtaxing the PAYE goose that lays the golden egg.
