Dear Editor,
I write this letter in response to Chris Burns' article in The Agenda of Sunday Observer December 14, 2014, entitled 'The inevitability of Tufton's return to the JLP'.
In that article, Burns appropriately described Tufton's attributes, which I agree are important for Jamaica's political future and national development. Attributes which are sadly lacking in many who have gone before and many of the current crop in both political parties.
It is an interesting coincidence that Tufton's return came a few weeks after the Central Westmoreland by-election, and the airing of an interview on local television involving Raymond Pryce and Mikael Phillips, who are also mentioned in the article.
The morning after that interview came on it seemed the entire Mona Campus was electrified by discussions about how young Pryce was direct, articulate, and every bit the match for veteran journalist Cliff Hughes. Most importantly, Pryce was informed, informative and credible. His presentation became the subject of a group assignment requiring us to check his facts.
In those discussions, some students who openly stated their preference for the JLP had to concede that Andrew Holness "needed" a Raymond Pryce. Someone who can communicate well to a generation of Jamaicans who are searching for value in politics and politicians and get us to view things from his perspective. It is something that neither Floyd Green nor Delano Seiveright before him have been able to do for Holness and the JLP.
Maybe now with Tufton's return there will be greater competitive balance between the JLP and the PNP in recruiting supporters. By the way, as a JLP sympathiser, I must also place on record that the only thing better than Raymond Pryce in an interview on radio or television is Raymond Pryce in person. A few of us attended a presentation he gave here on campus a few months ago and were very surprised at how charismatic and captivating he is. Welcome back, Dr Tufton, you have a lot of work to do in playing catch up on your party's behalf; Pryce cannot be allowed to rule the youth audiences all by himself.
