Dear Editor,
I use this medium to intercede on behalf of the citizens of Dry River District, Maggotty PO, St Elizabeth, in the constituency of North West St Elizabeth.
I recently visited home, and to be frank I was shocked by the deplorable conditions of the road network. Not only is the road network pothole-ridden, but the overgrown shrubbery has creating an overhead bridge. This poses serious threats to both drivers and pedestrians.
I don't believe that as citizens of Jamaica, land we love, that contribute to the social fabric of this country, and who are honest taxpayers, should be disrespected in such a manner that they do not have the basic infrastructure needed to enhance their lives.
When an inquiry was made about their Member of Parliament, J C Hutchinson, the response from the constituents was that "he seems to be on a prolonged vacation" and is missing in action. Others say it seems Hutchinson is not concerned about the citizens of Dry River because "they do not support his political view" and so will never be recipients of any of his social interventions.
I thought that partisan, tribal politics was an archaic practice in Jamaica which has no place in this post-modern society. I thought that an MP's role is an all-inclusive one and, once elected to office, he/she should work diligently to enhance the social well-being of every citizen, and not just a select few. The fact is, the funds placed at each MP's disposal are not some family inheritance to propagate the tenets of pork-barrel politics, but it is the people's money to be used for the development of that particular constituency and its constituents irrespective of their perceived political inclinations.
The citizens of Dry River deserve better, and should be assisted by their political representative. Thus, I will use every ounce of energy I possess to bring attention to their plight because they are not 'some bastard child' looking for handouts, but only require that their MP fulfils his obligation to them as his constituents, as required by the constitution of Jamaica. Is this too much to ask?
