Dear Editor,
We at Youth for Change have found the recent comments made by former Public Defender Earl Witter regarding "young" Acting Public Defender Matondo Mukulu very disturbing.
How can it be that the same man who, in his wise judgement, appointed the young man to act then says he "...is too young to have the security of tenure"? Not only is that statement alone discriminatory, it is a blatant disregard for the competence of Jamaica's youth in general.
If Witter made this big mistake in appointing Mukulu, it only speaks to his competence in the office. While Witter was busy in the office being a sesquipedalianist he missed out on what was important. Here we have a young man who, on the surface, in an acting capacity, has done far more than Witter or his predecessor.
If I remember quite well, Witter left office having not achieved much. What then is his relevance now? Maybe we, as a society, should question all his judgements.
Witter, we still are training our ears to learn what happened to the deceased youth, Kavorn Shue, from Mountain View.
Being aged is not the only credential that should be used to assess someone's competence, Witter.
Thanks to Mukulu, the Youth for Change organisation was and still is ecstatic about the sensitisation done for us in Clarendon. We wish you all the best for 2015 and beyond.
