Dear Editor,
Ever since Kelly Tomblin came to Jamaica to lead the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) I have admired her. My admiration started when she was willing to take a job with perhaps the most unpopular company at the time, willing to admit many of its issues, and then set about changing the perception of the JPS in the eyes of the public.
Alas, perception and reality are two very different things. And while she has certainly worked hard to convince the public that the JPS "cares", the company's recent action paints her in a very negative light. She comes across as more of a fantastic spokesperson who knows exactly what to say, but is really representing a company no more "caring" for Jamaica and its people than they ever were. I guess it remains true that actions speak far louder than words.
By recent action I refer specifically to the request for a massive increase in bills -- which thankfully has thus far been denied -- and the recent reports of the submissions for 15 per cent interest on bills not paid within, I believe, three days. Does Ms Tomblin believe that Jamaicans can afford a 21 per cent increase without us all going into bankruptcy while she can report larger profits to her 'masters' overseas? Does she believe that Jamaicans pay their JPS bills late -- even with threat of disconnection -- simply because they want to be late, or does she realise that oftentimes there is no money to buy food for the table?
To be clear, I realise that Kelly Tomblin is not Jamaica's prime minister and that her obligation is towards her company and its shareholders. To that end, though, I wish she would simply stop with the "I care so much" facade and go about her day-to-day business seeking further profits like all other capitalist CEOs do.
The reality suggests that Tomblin and the JPS could not really care if the recent requests for increases in electricity and interest on late payments are to be examined. Quit the act!
