Dear Editor,
The latest buzz on television across the world is the new hit series Empire. Most people, including myself, waited with bated breath for this show to start the moment we saw the previews and read the reviews.
But then TVJ dropped the bomb; they had bought the rights to the show and they have exclusive rights to air it, and they will air the episodes a week after the rest of the world has seen it.
I understand the first week it aired some cable stations actually showed Empire and not "block it out" as they were supposed to, based on TVJ's exclusive rights.
My question is, what about my exclusive rights. I signed a contract with my cable provider to provide me with a certain number of cable stations for a set cost. At no time in my agreement did it indicate that I will be "blocked out" and will not be able to view certain shows. Can I take legal actions against my cable provider, as well, for violating my contract? Because I signed my contract with my cable provider long before TVJ went ahead and bought exclusive rights.
As usual, the Broadcasting Commission is of no help. Who or where do citizens of Jamaica go for protection and help from these "big boys".
