Dear Editor,
"He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chaseneth him betimes." -- Proverbs 13: 24
Not so many months ago, Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ) was involved in the sex education controversy, in which they reportedly exposed children in six children's homes to content which spoke about anal sex. Now it is at the centre of reporting to a United Nations committee that corporal punishment is still highly prevalent in Jamaica, and that reports of child abuse are alarmingly common, yet there has been insufficient action in the legislature and policy level to combat this.
This is a total misrepresentation of the the facts. I guess the JFJ is totally blinded to the existence of Child Development Agency in Jamaica, which has been in existence for more than 10 years now. Or, is the JFJ unaware that no one is exempt from prosecution when it involves the abuse of a child? Maybe members of the JFJ should be brought before the court for their moral decadence in the sex education controversy.
But don't get it twisted, there is a difference between abuse and discipline of a child; in my opinion, not even the Government has a right to dictate how I discipline my child. My children represent me, my lineage, my heritage, my religion, my values, my bloodline, and at the end of my life it is God who will judge me on their upbringing. JFJ would have the world believe that all Jamaicans abuse their children.
In my opinion this is a deflection of JFJ's true amoral and anti-spiritual agenda. How can Jamaican for Justice dictate to me how to discipline my children when they are so tainted in the content they support? Moreover, why should Jamaica bow to this anti-corporal punishment body, when it is us Jamaicans who will have to live with the consequences of a society without discipline?
It is my understanding that children are our future, and disciplined children are the foundation of a great nation with unlimited possibilities.
