Opposition senators put power above all else

Dear Editor

Jamaica Labour Party Opposition Senators Nigel Clarke and Ruel Reid should never have accepted Andrew Holness's offer to sit in the Senate under the obviously preposterous circumstances that created the vacancies.

It showed to me their penchant for power above all else.

Lest we forget, the resignations of Arthur Williams and Dr Christopher Tufton were announced in the Upper House on November 15, although they had said they had no intention to step down following the Jamaica Labour Party leadership race involving Holness and Audley Shaw.

It later emerged that Holness had secured an end to the tenure of the senators by submitting to the Governor General undated resignation letters which all Senators were asked to sign before officially taking up appointment.

This is disgraceful and Machiavellian. However, the Senators, on a whole, including Williams and Tufton, Kamina Johnson-Smith, Marlene Malahoo-Forte, Kavan Gayle, Tom Tavares-Finson, and Robert 'Bobby' Montague should all be ashamed of themselves. They decided to sacrifice personal integrity for power. Now imagine what else they would be willing to do.

Had they been decent enough to decline signing the disgraceful letter, none of this would have happened today.

As such, I do hope that they are all admonished for selfishly putting their interests ahead of the people. They have all compromised themselves. These are not people I would trust easily.

Have we no decent people anymore?
