Dear Editor,
I would like to extend my appreciation to Marva Bernard for her consistency in directing the Sunshine Girls so valiantly and for her sense of commitment to work and country.
With the lack of funding and infrastructure, I think we are doing very well against the superpowers in netball internationally. Bernard must be singled out as a stalwart for the preservation of team spirit and the added ambience which seems to ever exist. She has done the impossible with the girls in the administrative sector and we, as Jamaicans, should hold her on a pedestal for her selfless services.
The girls have competed successfully, repeatedly against the likes of South Africa and England, which has better infrastructure and wealth than us as a Third World country. But, with the resilience of the players, along with the administrative skills of Bernard, we have been always on the fringe of effectively demolishing the real forces in the game in New Zealand and Australia. I do hope in her lifetime we shall see the Sunshine Girls consistently destroying the defences of these two teams to honour her grand legacy.
Bernard, you are an icon. I lift my hat to you for your yeoman service which has put the Sunshine Girls in striking distance of these previously insurmountable opposition. You are a gem in our sights for the negotiation skills you have displayed in begging for money for the emotional moments of need for the girls. Even when you are no longer capable of doing what you have been doing all these years, we shall always remember you. You are like Neville McCook to track and field, Billy 'Mystic' Wilmot for surfing, and Dr Michelle Holt in hockey.
