JUTC exclusive lane feels like a crime

Dear Editor,

As I sit for over an hour in traffic every morning on Mandela Highway, I think of how unfair an advantage the state-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has been given by our transport minister.

What started out as a test over a few weeks has become a 'day-mare' for others. It feels like a crime when you look at the empty lane with an occasional JUTC bus passing. The reality is that there are people commuting from as far as May Pen and Old Harbour who have to encounter the traffic build-up on Mandela Highway onto Boulevard's host of stop lights. And, with the numerous new schemes popping up each month the congestion gets worse.

It is confusing to hear our leaders talk about the high energy bill when they can facilitate an ease by allowing other buses to use the stretch.

Something needs to be done to lessen the travel time in the peak hours between Central Village and Six Miles not only for JUTC buses. How about having a trial period which allows all buses to travel on the JUTC's paradise lane, then make an assessment afterwards. Something needs to be done to ease the lengthy delays experienced by non-yellow buses and the increasing volume of traffic that is forcing drivers to risk a ticket on the 'soft shoulder'.

Another option for our leaders is to upgrade the other parishes so that equal work opportunities can be had and we don't all have to head to Kingston.
