Gov't by emergency and impressions

Dear Editor,

We have seen this modus operandi so often, and it occurs when either party is in power. And, so, every time any head of state visits, you always find the Government busy finding the money to repair roads and other trappings whilst they tell people that we must "band wi belly".

I am sure they are trying to impress the visitor. But, would not it be better that they showed that we are a broke country with a multi-trillion-dollar debt, children going to school without lunch money, and the other many dilemmas that the nation faces?

These heads of state may think we are doing well and spreading lies that we are poor when they see these grand, but temporary, thoroughfares and extravagances. Even worse, if they know the figures about our poor economic health, they make think we are not being fiscally prudent.

Our governments have always behaved like the lady who keeps the front of her house squeakly clean, but when you go into the backyard the trash is as high as the house.

This behaviour is testament to their lack of sure-footedness in how they govern. Their ability to find the $102 million to sort out the fire at the dump is ample evidence that they react to disaster and are not good at pre-emptive actions towards the nation's development.

There is need for a better crop of parliamentarians; people who crave excellence in governance, and thus the betterment of the people, and not the well-lettered charlatans we have in the House.
