Dear Editor,
My property tax went from $2,500 to $7,000, and all I can think of is the former Mayor of Lucea Shernet Haughton.
Haughton awarded contracts to 11 members of her family and some people are saying that as long as the work was done properly we shouldn't be offended or complain. What is the likelihood of these family members being fit and proper persons to fulfil the contractual stipulations?
She then threatened to release damning information on the rest of councillors, which would suggest that this nepotism (corruption) is widespread. Is this confined to Lucea?
Now we are being told by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that the former mayor's actions were unethical, but not criminal, and that we should change the law. This is all simply deja vu.
Remember our current reality star Kern Spencer and the Cuban Lightbulb scandal? Beverly Manley-Duncan called him on the Breakfast Club programme and he admitted that after being given the assignment he looked around and couldn't find anyone capable of managing it, so he turned to family members and close associates. The subsequent trial ended with the DPP dropping all criminal charges. We had the chance to stop the rot then and didn't. Therefore we shouldn't be surprised.
We elect people to govern this country and make our lives better, but they are off on a frolic with no consequences to their actions and we are left holding the bag.
