It is not my intention to enter into the debate as to whether or not the decriminalisation of marijuana is a positive or a negative move for our country.
However, I would like to state my utter dismay at the freedom with which some people, who gathered at the University of the West Indies on April 20, to witness the first "legal ganja plant" being set in the earth, were happily smoking their spliffs in a public space and in full view of the television cameras. They showed blatant disregard for the law and disrespect for dignitaries and members of the public with whom they mingled.
The fact that this was a "historic event" should not allow for the anti-smoking law to be breached.
I find this behaviour unacceptable and wonder what message we are sending to our children and to the public at large.
