Dear Editor,
I am pleased that within Jamaica there is a political party in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) that believes in giving the people a voice in terms of how our nation is governed. This is indeed a fresh approach to the much more common scenario of politicians not listening or even pretending to listen to the people until an election is due.
Since achieving self-government, it is a known fact that Jamaica has only had one referendum. It is with this in mind and my strong belief in the need for our democracy to be strengthened for the voice of the people to be heard that I wholeheartedly support the JLP, under the leadership of Andrew Holness, calling for a referendum that the people may decide which court is their final court of appeal.
Such a move by the present Administration would no doubt draw the support of the growing number of disenfranchised Jamaicans who are not participating in the voting process. It is now up to the Government to do the responsible and logical thing. Please bear in mind that we youth voters are watching. If you wish to win our respect then ask for our opinion by means of a referendum. Failure on the part of the Government to do such would be disrespectful to the memory of Norman Manley who, though he had his own opinion of the direction the country was to take during his tenure as premier, yielded to the calls of the people for full independence after a defeat of Jamaica's only referendum since self-government.
He who truly believes in people power, let him ask the people. He who believeth not is an enemy of democracy.
