Dear Editor,
I wish to congratulate my friend (Father) Michael Lewis, former Roman Catholic priest, for renouncing his vows of celibacy and taking the beautiful Patricia Moss-Solomon for his bride.
I met Father Michael while he was the rector of the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and as he travelled with me on several occasions to the place of interment after funeral services. We would always have a lively discussion on current affairs, etc.
Father Lewis is the second Roman Catholic priest in Jamaica, that I am aware, to have renounced his vows, the first being Father Harry Mallett, who baptised me while he was a priest at St Anne's Catholic Church in the 1960s.
The loss to the Roman Catholic Church is the gain of communities like the Anglican Church, where priests are allowed to join in holy matrimony and raise a family while ministering to the flock.
Father Lewis, welcome to the club, and I wish you all the best as you balance the spiritual side of things with a family.
We look forward to seeing you working in Jamaica once again, and again reading what you write.
The revolutionary Pope, Holy Father Francis, who once worked as a bouncer in a nightclub and who was very instrumental in the talks with the USA in ending the Cuban embargo, should look into the vow of celibacy and allow nuns and priests to enjoy the holy sacrament of matrimony.
I do not believe being married would affect their performance, dedication and commitment.
