Dear Editor,
I, for one, am team Jamaica.
For some people, Jamaica is merely just another country on the map, while for others, it represents the birthplace of legends such as Bob and Bolt. But, for myself, and approximately 2.9 million other people, it is much more than the author of men and women with vocal chords woven by an angel's finest string, and more than the possessor of unprecedented talents that transcend all others on the world's stage. For us, it is the place we call home. However, the foundation upon which our home stands is crumbling; debased by a perverted political system. Patriotism to our country has been replaced with party affiliation.
The provenance of voting lies within the best interest of parties and not national advancement. Party leaders seem to revel in this misconstruct, where allegiance is ascribed to party and not country. Therefore, enough is not being done to sculpt loyal Jamaicans, instead of chauvinist Labourites and Comrades.
I believe the colours associated with each party should be extirpated and replaced with the colours of the Jamaican flag: black, green and gold. After all, they are selling us Jamaica's future, not party membership. No longer should our schoolchildren have to suffer at the hands of party bigots because of the colour of their uniforms; no longer should our communities be indifferent towards each other because of a certain colour cloth lining its borders; no longer should our country remain segregated at the hands of party colours.
I am only 19 years of age, and, yet oh so tired of seeing orange and green flags decorating the landscape with no regard for my country's flag. The prime minister and Opposition leader should see to this issue and fix it, as it is the addressing of small issues like these that will repair the immense holes in our country's political structure. Implement whatever rules you must, but the next meeting you have, let the space be adorned with the colours that truly represent the Jamaican people.
The next time you end a speech, Madam Prime Minister and Sir Opposition Leader, instead of welcoming the shouts of your party's name, welcome the shout of our country's name. We are still one nation.
Despite my political preference, I am only team Jamaica. My party is only here to help build and see to the enhancement of my team — team Jamaica.
