Dear Editor,
There is a reason that as a Jamaican and as a woman I could never again give my vote to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). The disrespect that I have seen shown towards Shanique Myrie in a certain forum on social media as a result of her decision to join the political team of the People's National Party (PNP) speaks volumes.
The comments made by some, such as, she is bleaching or there is a reason she have the experience in Barbados, tell me that many of these people are classless, ignorant and just plain illiterate. It smacks in the face that these people who have the right to vote have no knowledge of their constitution or what it even entails.
Under the constitution, Myrie has the right to be a part of any political party she sees fit. She does not need anyone's approval to make her decision, regardless if she is joining a losing party, as they claimed that the PNP is, or not.
Like the social media doctors they are, they have dissected, operated, and cut up all the pieces of Myrie, much to the point that if one did not know better, one would think she was not worthy of respect. The power of social media can speak volumes and be an effective tool if one knows how to use it with common respect and decency.
Sadly, from their decision of boycotting a newspaper, to disrespecting a fellow Jamaican, and a female at that, it shows that many supporters of the JLP are themselves hell-bent on destroying the party and sinking it further and further into the abyss of nothingness.
Sadly, the release from JLP Headquarters distancing themselves from certain comments made in certain forums on social media has come a little bit too late, and as such they are paying and will continue to pay dearly for it.
