Marine and human life affected by spill

Dear Editor,

It is the norm for my two boys to go swimming by the waterfront downtown. We live nearby and during their leisure time they go with friends. In fact, it's an activity for many of the children and even adults in the area.

With this recent oil spill in the harbour, I have had to put a stop to my boys going. The reports say that the spill has been contained, yet there is still a visible shiny substance that lingers on the surface of the water. As a result, I cannot allow my boys to bathe in this water, because who knows how harmful it might be to them.

Downtown Kingston is our home; it might not be posh and ostentatious, but it is still a place of residence for many. It is not everything that's out of downtown is bad, there's a lot of good too, so let's not neglect and pollute this area.

If companies are committed to the environment, they must ensure that this incident doesn't happen again. It not only affects the marine life in the harbour but also the leisure activity which these young boys use to occupy themselves.
