Dear Editor,
The Friendship Primary School in Spanish Town, St Catherine, had its annual Parents' Day on November 29, 2012. It was a Parents' Day with a difference. In attendance were representatives from the Victim Support Unit, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, HEART Trust/NTA and the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual and Carnal Abuse.
Approximately 300 parents attended, participated in the discussions with presenters from the various organisations, and gave their full support to the day's activities.
The rapport among parents and the staff was superb. Mr Collington Powell, the school's principal, gained the utmost respect from my colleague and me, as we observed him giving his full participation to the day's activities, assisting his members of staff in whatever they were doing.
The activities culminated with the most important and rewarding event of the day, a graduation exercise for 28 parents. These parents were trained at the school in parenting skills such as parenting styles, laying the foundation, how to help my child obey the happy way, positive attitudes, healthy lifestyles and many more.
As I sat and watched the proud parents in their gowns sitting on the podium waiting to receive their certificates, I thank God for the creative minds that planned and executed such a programme that would allow parents to become more involved in the lives of their children, and in so doing, helping to build better communities and a nation.
I wholeheartedly commend the principal, Collington Powell, vice-principals Lennox Grant and Deloris Gordon; guidance counsellors Rose Brown and Regina Johnson, the teaching staff and the school board for such a bold initiative.
My day at the Friendship Primary School was a memorable one.
I would encourage all educators, especially those at the early childhood and primary levels, to adopt this bold initiative as they strive towards nation building.
