Transport Authority needs urgent rethinking

Dear Editor,

I am no fan of indiscipline of any kind among motorists, including taxi and bus operators, but I see danger looming as the taxi and bus operators, including robot operators, are being sufficiently integrated nationally to ignite spontaneous national chaos. This would be an undesirable consequence of hard times, compounded by draconian, undemocratic ands poor management of transport matters.

Corporate Area taxi operators withdrew their service recently as they protested the Transport Authority's insistence that hackney carriages carry no more than three passengers. Four passengers plus the driver in a hackney carriage taxi is reasonable, and I am sure that our lawmakers and parliamentarians are not all unconscionable and unreasonable people. They should see the logic.

The authorities need to act urgently to thwart the ignition of looming spontaneous national chaos that could be ignited from the transport sector.

The Transport Authority maintains, perhaps, an incestuous position, seeming always to act in the interest of the Government-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company, in consort with the police, to protect JUTC passenger loads. This type of thinking has no place in Jamaica, even in a semi-modern democracy. The Transport Authority needs urgent rethinking and reorganisation to reflect the importance of transportation to national development.
