Dear Editor,
I am sad that Ken Baugh is leaving representational politics. He is a dignified and caring soul trying to help the poor and forgotten people of St Catherine West Central.
He implemented several programmes which benefited people greatly. I am not ashamed to say my family benefited from his pig-rearing project and that it paid my university fees.
Councillor Devon Wint has been Dr Baugh's faithful understudy and, from what I understand, was even endorsed by Dr Baugh. Let's be frank, Councillor Wint is not a Ken Baugh. He is rough around the edges and not likely to be made a Cabinet minister. Neither is he likely to win favour with the 'big boys' of the private sector. This is not necessarily a great a concern for delegates, but I
am sure it is a consideration. Notwithstanding his shortcomings, he would have developed strong bonds over the years, so let's see how they withstand the force of cash expected to flow.
Dr Tufton is bright and ambitious. He wants Ken's seat to boost his political stocks and plant the idea of carrying on Ken's legacy of the gentleman politician. But I have weighed Tufton and he doesn't measure up to Ken Baugh.
When Dr Baugh lost the seat to Alethia Baker in 1997, he stayed with the people. He didn't go looking for a safe seat elsewhere; he made his seat safe and contributed it to his party's victory. I have never heard Ken utter a disparaging word on a platform about anyone, especially the party leaders. I have never heard Ken Baugh's name being involved in any move to destabilise his party or be in any gang or group to undermine the leadership of his party. And Ken would never take his party to court. I never got the feeling that he was using us as a footstool to project himself. I have spoken to Dr Baugh a few times, and I get a genuine sense of a person who cares. I have spoken to Dr Tufton a few times as well and I didn't get that feeling.
I really wish Ken Baugh would stay as my MP.
