Dear Editor,

A recent Sunday Observer news story written by Vernon Davidson stated that the United States' Government, principally through the Department of State's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section and the Ashton Carter-led US Department of Defence, would be donating some 17 new patrol boats to the Jamaica Constabulary Force and Jamaica Defence Force. This is commendable and widely appreciated by us Jamaican citizens who very well understand the immense asset that they will be when they are delivered to the Jamaican Government. The incontrovertible fact is that Jamaica is a major country in which drug trafficking takes place and those incoming patrol boats will be a major positive equipment boost for the country's two law enforcement agencies.

The current commissioner of police, who is a former distinguished head of the police's elite narcotics division, has the difficult task, along with his other police leadership corps, of methodically focusing on clamping down on the drug cultivation, preparation and export of drugs from Jamaica. This is linked to meticulously investigating and apprehending the major drug groupings within our country. Jamaica's coastal and territorial waters are frequently being used by nefarious drug traffickers and the police and army must be given all the relevant resources and equipment to effectively tackle this enormous problem.

The US Government deserves widespread felicitations in this respect and they are undoubtedly a close international partner with Jamaica in assisting to tackle and effacaciously address this gargantuan problem, which is a billion-dollar industry.

I commend the Ambassador on his work so far and wish him a successful tour of duty in Jamaica.
