Dear Editor,
I read with concern the Daily Observer story about a mother whose brother was abusing her daughter among other abuse suffered by this juvenile. The mother was let off with a slap on the wrist by the judge. And that is sad.
The question I would like to ask is, what about the future of that child? Is she expected to return to that family home and resume life as normal? One does not have to be particularly perceptive to know that her life is going to be extremely difficult. Couldn't the judge figure this out?
It is decisions like these why we see so many missing children on TV every night. These are not 'bad' girls. They are just running from difficult and miserable circumstances. Some know, from their own experience or the experience of others, that going to court quite often makes things worse.
Did the court order counselling? Was a social inquiry report ordered to determine if it was desirable or safe for her to return to the area?
This mother given a 'little change' for not reporting her brother to the police. Was he taken into custody for abusing a minor? Oh! nobody remembered that one -- the main problem.
I have been screaming, but nobody is listening when I say, our children deserve better!
