Dear Editor,

Freedom of speech must come with a burden of responsibility. What our leaders say must count for something extra special and credible, even if we disagree.
Peter Bunting seems to have a firm grasp on issues concerning the lottery scam. While speaking in St James, he dissected the scammers, telling how they steal clients and murder whoever they find when they cannot locate victims. St James has a 67 per cent increase in murders, Westmoreland almost 100 per cent, and Hanover 79 per cent. Bunting said that when pastors criticised the lottery scam, congregation support fell -- and I guess offerings.

But it was St James Central Member of Parliament Lloyd B Smith that made very controversial remarks: He said that we must acknowledge that lottery scamming has benefitted supermarkets, hardwares, and the Government through GCT. He left out the church, car dealerships, housing construction, etc. But the economic gains cannot mitigate the vicious murders associated with it. It is easy money that doesn't require high investment. Our leaders cannot expect that economic gains can be sustained through criminal ingenuity. The cocaine trade in the 1980s virtually built Miami, but the costs in lives were horrendous.
Then it is alleged that Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams said that he is 99 per cent sure that one of the suspects arrested was involved in the brutal killing of Constable Crystal Thomas. Now that is a death sentence. All Mario Deane allegedly said was that he didn't like police and that was his death sentence. Our leaders have to be more responsible whenever they open their mouths. Thereafter encouraging INDECOM to conclude their investigation cannot make up for such a chilling remark.
