Dear Editor,
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), so often accused of being run in a corrupt manner, left no doubts regarding the validity of accusations of mismanagement when the Riverton dump was ravaged by fire earlier this year. Jamaica suffered environmentally, socially, and economically from the NSWMA's comical attempts at containing the blaze.
Despite this, popular discussion regarding Joan Gordon-Webley's application for People's National Party membership has been fraught with a short-sightedness and partisan mindset. As a forward-thinking Jamaican, I look beyond the political consequences of Gordon-Webley's application and have focused on the hope that she will regain her former position as the head of the NSWMA. Sadly, our politicised society prevented this appointment as long as she retained Jamaica Labour Party affiliation.
Gordon-Webley's tenure as the head of the NSWMA brought about regularised garbage collection, proper landscaping of public areas, innovation, and a host of benefits. I specifically applaud her insistence to utilise and repair machinery owned by the agency and consequent refusal to rent such equipment. Jamaica needs more such individuals in leadership positions, who focus on maximising their available resources rather than using the common crutch of budget constraints.
It is my sincerest hope that the Gordon-Webley's application is swiftly ratified, allowing her to join the NSWMA in a management or, at least, a directorial capacity.
