My granddad's been in a wheelchair for over 24hrs!

Dear Editor,

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, as this morning I was informed that my granddad has been admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay after he got stroke leaving half his body paralysed.

The thing that has brought tears to my eyes is that it has been over 24 hours now since being admitted to the hospital and, believe it or not, my granddad has been sitting in a wheelchair.

I got to understand that the hospital is at maximum capacity. No bed is available and patients are being held in wheelchairs and on benches while being attended to.

The Cornwall Regional Hospital is the main hospital in the Western Regional Health Authority providing specialist services and is the only hospital outside of Kingston providing most of the specialist services. And this is the state of its affairs?

The number of seriously ill patients admitted to our government hospitals has increased steadily over the last few years and overcrowding of the wards is now a common scenario. This overcrowding of the hospital has placed an increasing economic burden on the hospital, leading to a shortage of hospital beds, delays in laboratory tests, and a shortage of nursing staff. But what is our Government doing about this? I see the Government spending taxpayers' money on senseless activities and critical things, like expanding these overcrowded hospitals, are left undone and unseen.
