Dear Editor,
The threat of boycott of Chinese businesses due to their supposed non-involvement in community development made by Gloria Henry, the president of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, is wrong on so many levels.
First of all, while I am not Chinese, it passes as a racist statement, whatever her intentions may be. Why narrow to just one ethnic group? Aren't there Indian, black, Syrian and white businesses guilty of the same thing? So why not include them?
Second, what does she say about the Government's non-involvement in community development? Don't the Chinese businesses pay taxes like everyone else? Yet, in return, they see expensive galas and personal vehicles, and not fixing essential services and infrastructure. The Government has certainly not done its part in developing Montego Bay, or the entire country for that matter. Taxes are used for the government's pleasure. What does she say about that? Yet, she had the nerve to say the Chinese businesses are not contributing.
Finally, if there is anything helpful about this statement, it is that it reveals the harmful entitlement and dependent mentality that our country has. Why is it that Chinese businesses come to a foreign land and prosper, yet we cannot prosper in our own homeland? Maybe it is because we are not willing to work hard and burn the midnight oil like they do.
To quote James 4: "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight." If we like to be called a Christian country, we would do well to heed Proverbs 14: "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." It's one thing to help our brother, it's another to foster his laziness.
Therefore, I urge Gloria Henry to retract her statement and hold the Government, accountable instead. For they have the greatest part in development, and they have failed utterly.
