Dear Editor,
Should we go with those who are for it or against it? Should we obey the voice of the church or leave matters in the hands of God? Must we utilise the gift of wisdom and do what we think may be right? What route should we take? And what am I talking about? You will know in a moment.
The Custos of Manchester Sally Porteous was reported by the press a few weeks ago that she desires the resumption of the death penalty. This very concerned lady said in the article: "I want to know how many more are to be killed before somebody says, 'Stop! It's enough'. I 'm saying stop, it's enough! Get the gallows ready and hang them." She continued: "We have been far too high in the murder rate for too long, and if you go abroad and sit among a group of people and ask them, 'Would you come to Jamaica to live or to invest?' They would tell you no, and the reason is because they are afraid of being killed," said Miss Porteous.
The entire Jamaica needs to take into serious consideration what Miss Sally Porteous has said, because, it's concrete stuff. It could be seen as a matter of life and death, or the country standing between the devil and the deep blue sea (a little exaggeration). We all should collectively endorse her comment and speed up the death penalty.
The year 1988 was the last hanging in Jamaica, and that's a long time ago. In these terrible days, when people are dying so brutally, and with the murder rate always dominating the society, we should reintroduce the death penalty. It could very well reduce the murder rate; it certainly can't hurt. Nothing tried, nothing done.
Let's go forward in faith with the death penalty and never look back or take a second thought. Enough is enough! Too many of our people are dying untimely. We cannot allow fear to take over our country; we must not allow a handful of criminals to destroy Jamaica.
