Dear Editor,
Coach Winfried Schaefer has done a good job piloting Jamaica through Copa America and to the finals of the Gold Cup. But he has a blind spot which, hopefully, will not sink Jamaica's World Cup chances.
He continues to insist, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that central defender Michael Hector is international calibre. He is not, no matter what Chelsea thinks.
Hector's failings led to the decisive goals in the 0-1 losses to Uruguay and Argentina in Copa America. The writing should have been on the wall then, but for some inexplicable reason Schaefer persists with him. We all know what happened in the Gold Cup final with his two horrible errors. Instead of being benched, all sorts of weak Asafa-like excuses, explanations and 'encouragements' have been offered, even from those who ought to know better.
Now he's back and his puny excuse that a tackle cost the second goal in the shocking 2-3 loss to Nicaragua. How much more grief will he bring before Schaefer sees what so obvious to so many Jamaicans football fans?
