Tribute to fairness?

The foreign service officials wish to pay tribute to P Chin, in whose hands they had the confidence to place the analysis and the public delivery of a judgement concerning the assistance rendered by them to an inmate in Qatar.

Having been armed with information from both sides, Chin has declared himself "now satisfied that the ministry did, in fact, respond adequately and professionally to (the inmate's) plight".

In addressing the fundamental principle of fairness, in his public declaration, Chin lamented that it was "unfortunate that Nationwide Radio did not get the ministry's response for balance and clarity, instead of presenting the full one-hour interview to the public, as is, and later releasing the audio recording on social media".

Sadly, the very document on which he based his findings -- a minister's statement to the Senate (by me), concerning a report on the incarceration of a Jamaican national in Qatar, on November 27, last year -- has been in the hands of the media all that time.

The public is fully aware of the assault on the "professionalism" of the foreign service officials lasting for months without any reference whatsoever to that document, which came into the possession of P Chin just this past week.

Of course, the moral of this quite "unfortunate" and forgettable saga is that we must all pledge to worship at the shrine of fairness. That principled habit makes life and living so much more uncomplicated and pleasant.

P Chin, respect! Selah!
